Y’all know I love making pies, but this time around I decided on my peaches and cream crumble. This dessert option is perfect if you are pressed for time but still wanna make a delicious dish. Made with fresh peaches, savory crumble, and homemade whipped cream! It has all of the flavors of a homemade pie with half the work and time involved!
I spotted these gorgeous peaches while cruising the local farmers’ market one day. I was getting lost in all the fabulous fall-themed produce, but once I saw the fresh peaches, I could not pass them up. The best fruit dishes always start with fresh ingredients. I ended up with about 5 or 6 medium-sized peaches, perfect for making my peaches and cream crumble with an 8-inch cast-iron skillet!
The nice thing about this recipe is that you don’t really need to follow all of the ingredients exactly. This recipe is very forgiving and you can adjust the flavors to your liking. It will still cook up perfectly as long as you follow my tips below.
Tips for making delicious peaches and cream crumble:
- Always use fresh fruit! For whatever reason, I find cooking fresh fruit will actually intensify the natural flavor evermore. In this case, we are talking about fresh peaches. I was lucky enough to find these at the farmers market but you can certainly find some at the grocery store, as long as they are in season. I would not advise using canned or frozen fruit. Canned peaches are likely sitting in syrup that really takes away the delicious natural flavor of the peaches. Frozen fruit usually has too much water and you will end up boiling your peaches which can ruin the flavor and nutritional value. You could probably let frozen peaches thaw out first, but usually, the fresh flavor is compromised after that.
- Keep a close eye on your stovetop and your oven! As I mentioned before, this peaches and cream crumble recipe is a very quick one. That being said, if you are not careful, you could burn your dessert. You will be working with high temperatures through most of the process. I recommend staying close by at all times while this cooks to avoid any issues. In this particular recipe, I used an 8-inch cast-iron skillet which heats up very well and holds its heat for a long time! If you use this method, be extra careful and be sure not to burn yourself! I use this silicone handle from Amazon any time I need to heat up my cast iron skillet to keep my hands safe.
- If it smells good it’s good! This ties into my last tip about watching your peaches and cream crumble closely while it cooks at high temps. Once it comes time to put your crumble in the oven, be sure to your eyes and nose nearby! As soon as your kitchen starts to smell like peach heaven, its time to take it out of the oven to rest for a few minutes. This will keep your dessert from burning on you. There is a good amount of sugar especially in the crumble topping part of this recipe that could easily overcook and you don’t want that.
- Don’t be afraid to use substitutes. Have you ever rushed to the kitchen to create your favorite dish only to find out you have half the ingredients you need to make it? Don’t give up just yet, some of my best dishes were created when I had to substitute ingredients. Other times, I had to completely invent something new just by using what I had on hand that day. Not long ago I made chocolate chip cookies using palm shortening instead of butter and I could not believe how delicious they turned out. I mean, how does anything taste good if you can’t use butter? Even my husband (a cookie guru) was seriously impressed. I will have to post a recipe on that in the near future. This peaches and cream crumble recipe is another example of this. I didn’t have butter, white sugar, lemon juice, or vanilla ice cream this time around. So instead I used coconut oil, brown sugar, honey whiskey, and homemade whipped cream. Let me just tell you, it turned out AMAZING!!!
Side note: I can not stand whiskey…yuck! Buuut after I cooked it down on the skillet, it gave the peaches the most fantastic rich honey flavor. As I mentioned earlier, you can always use lemon juice instead.
I really hope you give this recipe a try and make it a staple in your household. You will never really have to fret over what to make for dessert because you will always have this quick option up your sleeve. Every season brings new fresh fruit, this recipe will always be able to put those delicious flavors to good use. I think your family or dinner guests will be seriously impressed. You can absolutely use other fruit like apples, pineapples, cherries, etc. I recommend just using whatever fresh fruit is in a season where you are.
