Want to know how to make the most of a small backyard? You will be surprised at how much beauty and function you can get out of a small space. I’m talking about plentiful gardens, scenic birdbaths, and birdhouses, a space to entertain and unwind. Yes… all of that in a tiny little space. I’m going to show you how to make your backyard dreams a reality in just 3 steps…
Step 1: Embrace your small backyard space
Embracing your space can help you lean into the advantages of having a small backyard. Less yard simply means less maintenance! Yes, that is a plus! You will be spending less time mowing, weeding, maintaining, trimming, etc. and more time enjoying your backyard with your family. Small gardening projects have really been a joy to work on especially with our young daughter. These projects are easy to do and not too overwhelming. I kind of love that our hose can easily extend directly from the corner of our house and reach the gardens with no hassle!
Step 2: Practical and pretty items to place in your small backyard
Brainstorm some practical things you will need in your backyard and make these a priority when designing your space. Examples of this include: planting fruits, veggies, and herbs that you know you will get lots of use out of. Think about what size furniture and other amenities such as a cooking grill. Will these items fit in my space? Or will it become too crowded and difficult to maintain?
Don’t forget to mix in elements you will enjoy in your backyard as well. We love our small chiminea for wood-burning ambiance at night. It’s sleek, beautiful, and doesn’t take up too much space! We planted an assortment of flowers to add beauty and attract bees and butterflies to aid pollination in our gardens. Garden structures such as pretty statues, birdbaths, and birdhouses are another practical AND pretty way to add character and function to your small backyard.
Emerging Green Birdhouse
Our newest addition to our birdhouse collection in our backyard is this beautiful birdbox from Emerging Green. This birdbox is made of eco-friendly material. It was designed and assembled by a small family-owned business dedicated to a sustainable green future. The box is made of solid wood, it came fully assembled and was easy to mount up in our backyard. The entire front door can lift up for easy cleaning. Step 3: Think small when creating your backyard space
You don’t have a lot of room in your backyard, so it is wise to use whatever space you have wisely. Brainstorm which kind of plants, veggies, etc you KNOW you will use the most! Use handy tools such as rotating sprinkler systems, watering cans, rotating compost bins, trimmers, tomato cages, and above-ground potting systems. All of these items can help you fit in all of the fruits and veggies you desire to grow without running out of space!
